Introduction

We all start at different places. Maybe you experience debilitating symptoms or a vague dissatisfaction. I can help by discussing your concerns in greater depth. As a board-certified psychiatrist, I am trained to diagnose, treat, and educate patients about a variety of mental health conditions. With that said, we do not all need a full diagnosis (from the psychiatric Diagnostic and Statistical Manual) to benefit in treatment. Just starting wherever you are is a big step. I have found that this patient, curious approach works best for most of us.

It is normal to feel concerned about potential side effects in routine psychiatric treatments. I understand these worries. We can decide together what is best for you in your situation. Often, I recommend that patients try medications if there is significant reason to fear for your safety, daily functioning, or impact on loved ones. Some patients do well with prioritizing psychotherapy at first before deciding to introduce medications. I am comfortable with a variety of preferences. I prefer to work with patients on minimizing their medications overtime while also improving their emotional capacity.

With or without medications, we can approach treatment with an open-mind and various therapy options. I have experience with cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and humanistic therapy to name a few. I often think about how current difficulties connect to early-life experiences, developmental milestones, and patterns of connecting with loved ones. I am pursuing additional training and certification to become a psychoanalyst, which we can discuss further if interested.

I believe that psychiatrists can be most helpful when managing both medications and therapy. The reason being that various factors in our personal lives can affect our moods as much if not more than a medication. I want us to mutually decide whether any medication is “working” and what could be confounding that judgement. Both medications and therapy have unique limitations. We can experiment to decide what works best for you and discard the rest.
